Camp Highlight – Ongava Tented Camp – Namibia

RhinosOngava tented camp is a new camp to me and I’m excited to see it.  Ongava tented camp is a small camp, 8 tents, on the Southern boundary of Etosha National Park.  Ongava is one of the largest private game reserves in Namibia.  Ongava tented camp provides a very unique experience in Africa, it provides the possibility to see both the black rhino and white rhino.  Rhinos are such a rare experience in this age, I feel it’s a exceptional opportunity to stay at a camp where both the white and black rhino can be viewed.

If you love wildlife, you’re in for a rare treat at Ongava, because ours is one of the few private game reserves in southern Africa where you have a chance of seeing both Black and White Rhino. For those who enjoy close wildlife encounters, tracking White Rhino on foot with an armed guide is a highlight not to be missed. As well as Rhino, Ongava Game Reserve is home to a healthy population of Lion, Eland, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Black-faced Impala and a number of other antelope species.

Ongava also borders onto the Etosha national park, Namibia’s premier game viewing destination, which at almost the size of Switzerland is one of Africa’s largest game parks. Large herds of plains game concentrate around the waterholes in the dry season making for exciting game viewing. Species that can be seen year-round include Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Giraffe. Zebra, Wildebeast, Springbok, Gemsbok, Kudu and the diminutive Damara Dik-Dik also populate the area. Birdlife is rich and varied, with Ostrich and raptors in abundance. Local specials include the Short-toed Rockthrush, Hautlaub’s Francolin, Rockrunner, Rüppell’s Parrot, White-tailed Shrike and Chestnut Weaver.
