Camp Highlight – Vamizi Island – Mozambique
Vamizi Island is one of my most anticipated stops, I don’t know if I’m most looking forward to the destination or the journey. Vamizi Island in Mozambique, is a very small island just 7 miles long by less than a mile wide. The flight to this small island is going to be nothing short of stunning, the Indian Ocean is known for it’s stunning clarity and pristine waters. Upon arrival, we will have this island to ourselves, our own private island in paradise. I’m glad that there will be many pilots on this journey because they might be leaving me behind at Vamizi. Here is a list of activities.
Directly from Vamizi
On the surface, Vamizi Island is utterly mellow. Go a few feet below and everything changes, as the Vamizi seas – which residents share with no other tourists – are bristling with big ocean action.
SOME OF THE DIVES HERE ARE SAID TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD AND THE DEEP SEA FISHING IS EXHILARATING.
But this is only part of the story… Snorkelling trips, castaway picnics, whale watching expeditions, kayak trips up the estuary, traditional dhow sunset cruises, nature walks, community visits and miles of beaches are waiting to be explored… keeping even the most active souls happy.
Resident naturalists offer informative walks into the interior, or a chance to monitor turtle nests. There are also mountain bike and running trails through the forest. A cultural tour can provide an insight into the traditional life of the island’s small fishing community and a chance to explore the ruins of the church and fort. One can draw inspiration and energy from the ocean and the forest to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect. The entire island is a sanctuary and our wellness approach goes beyond our expert treatments. Enjoy a yoga session with the ocean as your backdrop or experience a unique treatment inspired by Vamizi’s abundance of local plants, minerals and herbal therapeutics. And of course, embrace the restorative powers of an African sunset with a sundowner on the beach – this is the best medicine of all!
