In all my years of flying I have been fortunate to fly some incredible airplanes and in some beautiful places. I can tell you honestly, taking a flying safari through Africa in a Cessna 206, rates as my top flying experience. It all started out over a year ago when Luca Belpietro told me he wanted to do a flying safari through Southern Africa. I thought “this sounds amazing, but will never happen”, I told Luca I was in and he should plan it. Plan it he did and through it all he kept me in the loop, I couldn’t believe he was actually planning it, let alone was planning on doing it. That crazy Kenyan put together the trip of a lifetime and then put 10 guests on two airplanes for the journey. I flew in the Cessna 206 for all but one leg of the safari and we flew from Kenya to Namibia and back, the other airplane was a very nice executive Cessna Caravan. We flew 5700 Nautical miles covering some of the most remote places on earth. We flew over the open expanse of central Tanzania, the wilds of Zambia, the deltas of Botswana, the deserts of Namibia. We saw Elephants, Lions, Buffalo, Zebra, Giraffe, Wart Hogs and countless birds all from the air and dozens more during our ground safaris. We stayed at several of the most incredible lodges in the 5 countries we visitied. Campi Ya Kanzi, Mwagusi, Jack’s Camp, Savuti, Little Kulala and Serra Cafema to name a few.
I hope everyone gets to take a trip like this sometime in their lives. I know Luca is planning on making 2 trips a year, one Southbound from Kenya and then another Northbound. I think a 16-20 day safari will be perfect for the guests and depending on what they want to see, the two trips will be quite different.
