Africa is full of surprises and I was quite surprised when I arrived at Savuti Camp in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana. What a magical blending of African big game animals and delta scenery. The first night at camp I wasn’t feeling up to going out with everyone on the evening sundowner, I had spent enough time in vehicles and just wanted to chill at camp. While sitting around the campfire a couple of the staff talked me into going out for a boat ride. I gave in and we headed up the channel towards one of their fishing holes, it wasn’t long before I had line in the water and was giving lure fishing my full attention. Then from 50 yards away I heard unmistakable exhaling of a hippo that had been sitting under the water, holding his breath. Then another hippo popped it’s head up and exhaled loudly. And finally a third hippo did the same thing. There I was, sitting on a small aluminum boat in the middle of a fishing hole in Botswana and little did I know I had the company of three hippos, undoubtably laughing at my complete inability to catch a single fish. The wildlife in Africa is mind boggling, before coming to Africa for the first time I hadn’t seen many animals much larger than squirrels in the wild. Now, fishing alongside a few hippos is commonplace.
