Waco Biplane Flying – Video
Waco Biplane Flying has to be the most incredible experience of my flying career. This type of flying is what my soul says I’m supposed to be doing. There is nothing more special than flying an open cockpit airplane, 1000 feet above the ground, at highway driving speeds. For me, this is general aviation at it’s pinnacle. Flying around thinking about the men and women that did this 60+ years ago, landing in fields and navigating by looking at landmarks on the ground. That is pure flying.
Taking off from Long Beach Airport in Southern California, I head out towards the coast and climb up to 4500 feet to cross over Los Angeles International airport, before descending back to 1000 feet for a cruise up Malibu beach. From Malibu, I turn North and head into the Malibu hills for more breathtaking views. From there, I head to Camarillo airport for a quick bite to eat at Waypoint Cafe, a must for anyone in the area. Taking off from Camarillo you can smell the agricultural fields that encompass the area. From Camarillo I backtrack through the hills, to the Malibu coastline. Fortunately, the weather has cleared and I am able to cross Los Angeles airport at 2500 feet, getting a great view of all of the airline operations below. From here, it’s just a few minutes to Long Beach for a nice landing on runway 25 Left. After landing back at Long Beach, I realized I had an almost permanent smile plastered on my face for the last two hours. Waco Biplane Flying takes you back to the heyday of flying, I almost feel like putting on a scarf and leather helmet, fitting some nice looking goggles, filling the airplane with gas and never coming back.
Until next time Waco, you have captured my soul.
