Wildlife Game Count
Campi Ya Kanzi and Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust team up to count all of the wild game on Kuku Group Ranch at least once a year. This year I was privileged to be here at Campi Ya Kanzi during the game count. My roll was to fly the airplane in perfectly straight lines, 300 feet above the ground on 1000 meter transects of the entire group ranch. I had never done any flying like this before and the pilot for Campi Ya Kanzi taught me how to follow exact North/South transects over the 280,000 acre group ranch. This game count was done during two flights on the same day. The first flight was exactly 4 hours long and the second flight was 3 hours 25 minutes. It was exhausting but incredibly rewarding, knowing that we were taking part in preserving this land and the wild animals that call it home. We counted Eland, Gazelle, Dik Dik, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Giraffe, Buffalo, Warthog, Zebra, Elephant, Ostrich, Buck, Hyena and others I’ve surely forgotten.
